Due to a wave of online support?much of it from you guys?the Democratic Party committees in Wisconsin are starting the recall elections with a large cash advantage on their Republican counterparts. Here are the fundraising totals in the most recent reports, which show activity through March 21st:
?Almost all of the Democratic money came from small donors on Act Blue. Check out the Act Blue stats for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin here, and the Wisconsin State Senate Democratic committee here.
?The Democratic Party of Wisconsin spent a large amount of money because they are the central organizing hub for the recall petition gathering effort.
?The amount of money the Democratic committees have on hand exceeds the total amount of money all of the incumbent Senators facing recall have on hand:
* Hopper has $9,844 in debtsOverall, the Democratic advantage is solid but far from decisive. This is because outside expenditures are likely to dominate spending during recall elections, just as they did in the Supreme Court election. In that election, JoAnne Kloppenburg and David Prosser received a combined total of $600,000 in public financing for the general election, while six times that amount was spent by outside groups. The ratio of candidate money to outside money could be similar during the recall elections.

The drop was most pronounced among independents, who now have net unfavorable view of the Speaker, going from +16 to -11, a drop of 27 points.
Boehner also dropped among Democrats, going from -9 to -26. He still has a positive net approval rating among Republicans, but even that has dropped by 12 points, going from +54 to +42.
My bet is that these numbers are dropping not because of anything Boehner has done in particular, but rather because Congress is never particularly popular and because people continue to be unhappy with the country's economic situation. It reminds me of what Boehner said the other day about how President Obama's reelection chances are linked with economic performance. It's time for him to realize he's got something at stake here too.

I know you're shocked:
Citing Nevada?s need for ?an experienced voice in Washington, D.C.,? Gov. Brian Sandoval announced Wednesday that he will appoint Rep. Dean Heller to fill the vacancy of retiring Sen. John Ensign, whose resignation becomes official May 3.?Dean is an experienced representative who is ready for the responsibilities of this office, and who will work hard, not just for Nevada, but for the entire nation,? Sandoval said in a statement.
?Just as Senator John Ensign fought for states? rights and sound economic policies, Dean will speak out for the concerns of everyday Nevadans,? he said. ?I am confident he will help get Nevada working again.?
The only surprising thing to me is that Sandoval actually mentioned Ensign by name, but Dave Catanese has the governor's full statement, which ever-so-subtly jabs the resigning senator by calling Heller a man of "deep personal integrity."
Anyhow, now that this is all but over with, we can move on to the craziness that will ensue in the special election to fill Heller's 2nd CD seat. Should be some good times.

A Republican until he switched parties in 1971, the 72-year-old Panetta would be the first Democrat in the post since William J. Perry left at the end of Bill Clinton's first term. He served nine terms in Congress as a Representative from California and as chief of staff and director of the Office of Management and Budget under Clinton. He is not expected to encounter any serious opposition to his confirmation in the Senate.
"From the beginning, Panetta had enormous credibility with the White House," a former senior U.S. official who helped advise the Obama campaign told the Envoy last month. Citing Panetta's Clinton White House credentials, the former official said that he has a "terrific record in Congress and did an extraordinary job from the moment he was appointed [as CIA Director] in developing the confidence of the Agency."Kenneth Pollack, a former CIA analyst with the Clinton administration, said the anticipated appointment of Petraeus to head the civilian intelligence agency makes sense. Petraeus brings a ferocious intelligence, dedication to serving his country, and his experience reshaping the army to fight insurgencies to the job, Pollack noted. Rumors of the anticipated appointment initially perplexed some of Petraeus' military colleagues, however, since the general is one of the most celebrated military officers of his generation and has devoted his career to serving the military: CIA-Pentagon relations have often been tense.
"The bottom line is, this is a man with a remarkable career in public service and he wants to do it for some time to come," Pollack told the Envoy earlier this month. "I think that the CIA is going to be thrilled to have him. ... It's actually what CIA needs right now."
The first four directors of the CIA from 1946 to 1953 were active-duty military men, and three others have served since then, including Admiral Stansfield Turner under Jimmy Carter and Gen. Michael Hayden in George W. Bush's second term.
Too bad Gen. Petraeus won't be bringing all the troops home from Afghanistan with him when he takes over at Langley.
